Fraudsters call victims offering to check the authenticity of cash, including new five-thousand-dollar bills. To do this, they ask to install the official application of the Central Bank on the phone – “Banknotes of the Bank of Russia”. In this case, the link leads to a fake application. Through it, scammers gain access to accounts and steal money.
As the Central Bank explained, this scheme allows you to steal funds both online and offline. Moreover, in fact, the Bank of Russia Banknotes application does not allow you to determine the authenticity of banknotes.
As part of another scheme, scammers disguised as social service workers go to apartments and convince people to exchange old five-thousand-dollar banknotes for new ones—citizens receive counterfeit bills in exchange for real ones. “There are even cases of burglaries committed under the pretext of exchanging money,” the regulator said.
The Central Bank draws attention to the fact that the updated banknotes with a face value of 100 rubles. and 5 thousand rubles. are in circulation in parallel with the old ones, and also urged not to install unfamiliar applications via links and not to respond to offers to exchange or verify the authenticity of banknotes.
