More Bulgakov places – good and different – such a slogan, apparently, was adopted by Moscow cultural institutions. In the late 90s, everything was simple with the locations associated with the name of the author of The Master and Margarita: the “bad apartment” on Bolshaya Sadovaya Street was the only unofficial museum at that time. Today, a connoisseur of classic creativity, when looking at a map of the capital, has a desire to burst.
In December 2021, the “Good Apartment” was opened on Bolshaya Pirogovskaya, a modern space rich in exhibits. GMIRLI decided to keep up with their colleagues and in the early spring of 2023 they carved out a small area on one of the floors of the main building on Zubovsky Boulevard for a mini-exposition about Bulgakov and his last wife in the format of a “literary apartment”. A few days later, on March 13, the Mikhail Afanasyevich Museum opened the doors of the Bulgakov Center on the Arbat to visitors. Having decided that the “museum competition” deserves the attention of the press, the MK correspondent went to the legendary street, or rather, to the point “lost” in the courtyards between two lanes – Bolshoi Afanasevsky and Starokonyushenny.
It should be noted right away that the new Bulgakov Research and Education Center is still a look into the future, and not a “ready-made” museum. Created on the basis of an ordinary library, today it includes a collection of books, a lecture hall, several very small stands and showcases, the content of which will change, as well as a department of rare manuscripts and a unique “Memorial Cabinet of Marietta Chudakova”. The internal “infrastructure” is interesting, but it still seems like a brand new apartment, where the new settlers have not yet moved in, with a stove on which borscht was not cooked, and a sink in which no one washed the dishes. When the call “come, own us” — that is, do research within our walls — amateurs and professional scientists will respond, when the first scientific conference is held here, when the most important people in the life of any writer come here – readers, these bright rooms will be filled with life.
But the acquaintance was pleasant – with researchers and museum workers, with Maria Chudakova, the daughter of Marietta Omarovna Chudakova, one of the main Bulgakov scholars in the country, who, unfortunately, died in November 2021 from the coronavirus. And with her sister Inna Omarovna Mishina, the former director of the “Bad Apartment” – or rather, who created it from scratch together with Marietta.
A whole scientific group worked on the concept of the memorial office – it was at this table and in the light of this lamp that Chudakova worked, on these shelves – books from her personal library. Her archive – with priceless photographic documents, letters, typescripts, reviews – is now stored in a special room of the center-museum. The heroes of the archive are world famous philologists Viktor Shklovsky and Yuri Lotman, writers Veniamin Kaverin, Yuri Dombrovsky and, of course, Bulgakov and his wives.

“This is the original. The image is not very good, but it has not been published anywhere. Mikhail Afanasyevich, already dying, and next to him is Elena Bulgakova, ”she says.
The archive has not yet been studied, not subjected to an inventory and cataloging, which means that the main discoveries are ahead.
