The global market for foldable smartphones is shifting towards the premium segment. It provides higher profitability and resistance to economic downturns, concluded Counterpoint Research. According to their calculations, in the first quarter of 2023 alone, global indicators increased by 64% year on year. Devices with flexible displays accounted for 2.5 million units of shipments.
Another interesting observation came to light in China. There, with a general decline in the smartphone market, folding versions showed growth. For this category of devices, favorable forecasts extend for at least the next five years. The timing and numbers will be even longer if Apple introduces its new product with a flexible display, which, according to rumors, should happen in 2025. But for now, it is Chinese vendors that play a key role in the development of the segment.
I have already been able to test foldable models from Huawei, Oppo and Vivo. All of them are very well assembled, understandable from the point of view of the operating system shell, and at the same time noticeably differ in design and concept. This consumer-friendly variety was confirmed during a recent test of another smartphone with a flexible display – Tecno Phantom V Fold.
The manufacturer did not spare any components and equipped the new product with a processor from MediaTek – Dimensity 9000+, a generous package of RAM and storage 12 GB + 512 GB, a 5000 mAh battery with support for 45 W fast charging and five cameras. The build quality, in particular, the folding hinge, and the concealment of the fold do not raise any questions. Except that the smartphone opened tighter than we would like, and there was a sense of “nanoplay” in the halves. If the promised reliability of a couple of hundred thousand cycles requires this, then this item can be crossed off the list of concerns.
Stereo sound, protection from Schott UTG for the folding internal screen, for the external Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, two front cameras plus scenarios for using the external display, driving mode, adaptive frequency, materials and equipment leave a feeling of elaboration of what is called usability. The compromise for the Tecno Phantom V Fold is the photo and video capabilities. The presence of a stabilizer at least on the main camera would add points.
