The British regulator will check Unilever for greenwashing – Kommersant

UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) will check Unilever’s claims about the environmental friendliness of its products. The regulator expressed concern that the manufacturer of products under the brands Cif, Domestos, Rexona, Ax and dozens of others “may be overstating how environmentally friendly individual products are, using vague and broad language, unclear claims about recyclability, and also images and symbols that create the impression of a “natural” product.” The audit will take place as part of an investigation by CMA specialists into the situation with greenwashing in the British market.

Greenwashing (“greenwashing” – “eco-washing”, “green camouflage”) – excessive or false claims that a particular product offered is more environmentally friendly than it actually is, serves to protect the environment, combat climate change, aims to strengthen the green economy and so on.

“More and more people are trying to do their bit to protect the environment,” says CMA chief executive Sarah Cardell. “But we are concerned that many are being misled by so-called green products that are not.” The regulator will check Unilever’s claims about specific products, the labeling of those products, the images on their packaging (for example, green leaves suggestive of environmental friendliness) and check the products themselves to see how they correspond to the declared qualities of environmental safety and naturalness.

If the audit reveals a non-compliance, the regulator will “take action to ensure that consumers are protected.” As part of the investigation, the CMA also investigated Asos, Boohoo and Asda’s George brand.
