Gorky Park: revival with a twist
One World Freedom – “Freedom to the whole world” – the upcoming album of the legendary rock band “Gorky Park” revived by Stas Namin (Gorky Park – in the export version) is eagerly awaited by the public in March, as well as a revival concert at Crocus City Hall ”, and then the main highlight – the world tour.
Dates, cities and countries, however, have not yet been announced, but one can assume that the directors of many sites will become nervous in anticipation of a miracle. After all, it was Gorky Park that once announced to the world not just the fact of the existence of then Soviet rock, but also about a group that was not Soviet, but quite worthy of an international level and quality with understandable universal values and content. Otherwise, there would have been no breakthrough into the Billboard 200 chart with the debut album of Gorky Park, unheard of at that time. Long before all sorts of tATu, not to mention Little Big…
In addition to the powerful glam rock music, which destroyed the stereotypes of perception in the world of Soviet “light-genre” musical culture, the well-chosen name, Gorky Park, may have played a role. It came to Mr. Namin’s mind due to the location of his production center and concert base – in the Green Theater of the Central Park of Culture and Culture named after. Gorky. But at the same time, the whole world sang along with the perestroika anthem of the German Scorpions: “I follow the Moskva, down to Gorky Park” (like “I walk and walk along the Moscow River, going down to Gorky Park”). So “Gorky Park”, among other things, then became a stable brand phrase, not only the name of the new Soviet rock band, which, without realizing it, was so successfully advertised by the Scorpions, but also a true symbol of Wind of Change – the wind of change, unimaginable and incredibly all who inspired.
Revival, that is, the revival of the legendary rock substance after a thirty-year hiatus, happened in the summer of 2022 at the SNC 35 festival – on the occasion of the anniversary of the Stas Namin Center, and ZD then vividly described the “second rock coming” that unexpectedly thundered with good glam rock decibels ” However, it would not be an exaggeration to call the upcoming gig on March 1 long-awaited.
In the current incarnation, GP (or PG – as you like) has changed somewhat compared to the original composition of 1987, but, be that as it may, the wine has aged and acquired new notes in smell and taste. To begin with, the composition of the legendary rock band very timely acquired an international form, now representing a team of excellent Russian and American musicians.
Among them is the famous Russian virtuoso, lead guitarist and vocalist Oleg Izotov; member of the world famous bands Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake and other bass guitarist and vocalist Marco Mendoza (USA); legendary drummer Kenny Aronoff (USA), who worked with the iconic Smashing Pumpkins, John Fogerty, Paul McCartney, Joe Satriani and others; 17-year-old Russian virtuoso, lead guitarist and vocalist Timofey Grigorovich; possessing a unique voice, already known in Russia for his solo projects, leader-vocalist Sergei Arutyunov, son of the legendary blues vocalist and leader of the Blues League group Nikolai Arutyunov. For Sergei this will be a premiere, because… Due to illness, he was unable to participate in the band’s festival performance in 2022. The legendary leader-vocalist of the first line-up of the PG Nikolai Noskov will also take part in the concert.
Stas Namin himself is very inspired by the quality of the new line-up, explaining that the group now has “not one, but several excellent lead vocalists, not one, but two virtuoso lead guitarists, and all this together is absolutely unique, because There are virtually no rock bands like this in the world.”
Bass guitarist Marco Mendoza, for his part, claims that today’s “Gorky Park” is “the standard of performance and sound,” and joining such a band is an honor and luck: “I grew up in Mexico, 30 years ago I already heard about Gorky Park group. Becoming a member of this team was my dream, but I could not even imagine that this would come true. Stas and I became friends in 1994, and all the years I have admired the versatility of his talent.”
In addition to his own songs in Russian and English, PG will perform new works and several remakes of popular world rock hits in Moscow, including Masters of War. Songwriter Bob Dylan praised GP’s version, which was selected for a film about the history of rock music by producer Michael Cole (manager of The Rolling Stones). There was also a version of Stas Namin’s song “Girl from New York” based on the verses of Yevgeny Yevtushenko, which the musician wrote back in 1986 under the impression of his first concerts in New York.
Many of these songs were included in the mentioned studio album One World Freedom, and their concert performance in Moscow will become a starting point in a new round of the history of the legendary rock band.
