General Director of the Center for Biometric Technologies (CBT) Vladislav Povolotsky said in an interview “Izvestia” about the intention to launch a pilot payment project in stores using biometrics (bioacquiring) in 2024. According to him, at the moment the CBT, together with the National Payment Card System (NSCP) and the Bank of Russia, is conducting closed testing.

As Mr. Povolotsky noted, testing of bioacquiring by sight in the Wildberries online marketplace and Yandex services has already been completed. “We are also actively communicating with Ozon – I hope that we will soon develop a joint solution,” added Vladislav Povolotsky.

He also noted that now the unified biometric system (UBS) already contains tens of millions of samples of citizens’ faces and voices. According to him, several thousand people register in the database every day. At the same time, the transferred biometrics have a limited validity period of two years, after which the data is automatically deleted from the EBS. “We are now discussing how to give users the opportunity to remotely extend the validity period of data without additional in-person visits,” added Mr. Povolotsky.

June 17, First Deputy Chairman of the Central Bank Olga Skorobogatova statedthat the regulator wants to launch face-to-face payments in stores this year up to a certain amount. Then she noted that from the point of view of innovation, the mechanism could definitely be extended throughout the country, in all retail chains.
