The intendant of the Berlin Opera, Matthias Schulz, defended Anna Netrebko’s upcoming performance on the stage of this theater, which will be the first since the suspension of cooperation with the Russian artist in 2022.
In a column for the Berliner Morgenpost, the intendant indicated that Netrebko, in his opinion, after the start of the Russian SVO, “took a clear position and distanced herself” from the actions of the Russian authorities. The consistency of the singer’s actions deserves respect, Schultz noted.
“People are not infallible, but they can make choices,” the publication says.
The opera quartermaster concluded that in the case of Netrebko, “the artist should be given a chance.”
Previously, the Berlin Opera’s plans to stage a performance with Netrebko on September 15 caused protest at the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.
