Marquez’s posthumous novel will be published on March 6
The novel “See You in August” by Colombian Nobel Prize laureate Gabriel García Márquez has become one of the most anticipated literary events of the year, reports El Tiempo. On March 6, the writer’s birthday, the book goes on sale.
Magazine Lengua managed to find out the first sentence of the novel: “He returned to the island on Friday, August 16, by ferry at three o’clock in the afternoon.”
Publisher Penguin Random House confirmed the news of the release of García Márquez’s work last spring. The writer’s family, preparing for the tenth anniversary of his death in 2014, discovered the novel among his papers at the University of Texas.
Deciding to publish it because of its “numerous and very pleasing virtues” such as “inventiveness, poetry of language, captivating storytelling and deep understanding of people,” the Marquez family announced the book’s release. The writer abandoned this novel due to problems with cognitive functions.
Last year it became known that the publication was made possible thanks to the digitalization of the author’s archives at the University of Texas.
