John Lennon recorded a demo of “Now and Then” in 1978, accompanying him on piano in his New York City apartment. In 1980, John Lennon was assassinated. His widow Yoko Ono later gave Paul McCartney two audio cassettes with rough recordings of the musician. Two compositions, “Free as a Bird” and “Real Love,” were released in 1995 as separate singles. However, the quality of “Now and Then” was poor, with the musician’s voice difficult to separate from the background hum.
They returned to recording after filming the documentary The Beatles: Get Back by Peter Jackson. The director’s film company developed an application that allowed only John Lennon’s vocals to be left on the recording. The composition was supplemented by the rhythm guitar part of George Harrison, which was recorded in 1995, and new recordings by Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.
