The number of borrowers from banks and microfinance institutions (MFIs) has grown to 46 million in 2022, informs Bank of Russia with reference to data credit history bureau (BKI). The borrower base of MFIs is growing faster than that of banks – the number of bank borrowers is increasing mainly due to mortgages. There is also a growing number of borrowers who, in addition to mortgages, have obligations on other loans.
The regulator notes that in order to reduce the payment burden, banks began to provide more mortgage loans for 30 years. In the fourth quarter of 2022, their number amounted to 40% of the total number of loans issued, while a year earlier their share did not exceed 20%. “The proliferation of extremely long loans can carry risks. The Bank of Russia will continue to monitor the situation and, if necessary, will take action,” the Central Bank said.
The share of borrowers who took out a consumer loan, through which it was possible to pay the first installment on a mortgage, increased (7% in the fourth quarter of 2022 against 3.5% in the second quarter), follows from the BKI data. The number of outstanding loans from those who took out a mortgage in the fourth quarter of 2022 reached 2.2. (in the IV quarter of 2020 – 1.4 units), and the debt for each co-borrower is 2.6 million rubles.
