The authorities of the Democratic Republic of the Congo are studying the possibility of using the Russian payment system Mir in the country. This was announced by the Ambassador of the Republic in Russia Ivan Vangu Ngimbi.
Ivan Vangu Ngimbi clarified that the idea of using the Mir payment system was proposed by one of the Russian private banks against the backdrop of problems with money transfers due to sanctions imposed by Western countries. “We sent this proposal to the Congolese authorities, who are discussing this issue with the Central Bank and interested bodies,” he said (quoted by RIA Novosti).
The Ambassador noted that after the introduction of anti-Russian sanctions, the Embassy of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Russia faced difficulties in banking operations. The diplomatic mission cannot receive money to pay salaries to employees. According to Ivan Vangu Ngimbi, parents of Congolese students studying in Russia cannot send them money.
The Mir payment system currently operates in some partner banks in Abkhazia, Armenia, Belarus, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Cuba, Tajikistan, South Korea and South Ossetia. More than 15 countries have expressed readiness to implement it.
