The first year, according to cameraman Alexei Nemov, who worked with Debizhev and on his previous film Heavenly Crimea, they went there only to get the monks used to them. “Then the cinema began, when they began to seat us at a common table, when I began to walk around the monastery like at home,” said Alexei. The question asked by the authors of the picture – how faith in God affects a person’s life – also touched them. Alexey Nemov admitted: “A lot has changed in my views after my stay on Solovki. I became myself there.”
A professional jury led by the Yakut director and artistic director of Sakha-Film Alexei Romanov noted the work of the composer Vyacheslav Butusov in The Holy Archipelago. Boris Grebenshchikov (recognized as a foreign agent in the Russian Federation) was supposed to work in the picture, but he moved to London a long time ago, he was not even parting with director Sergei Solovyov, with whom he had a lot to do, which upset his colleagues in the film “Assa”. I remember how we sat at the wake and they called Grebenshchikov in London, and then lamented that he had not arrived. Butusov, as it turned out, turned to Sergei Debizhev with an abstract proposal to work together in the cinema, expressed his readiness to write music. The cards lay down so that it became possible. In the “Holy Archipelago” sounds the music familiar to us from the songs of the group “Nautilus Pompilius”. Vyacheslav Butusov is a church-going person. Everything came together.
The best film was awarded to the children’s film “Sweet Potato Flavored Ice Cream” by Chinese director Wang Chong, who personally won the award. He is an actor, and this is his first directorial opus, a naive picture about a boy visiting his grandmother after a family tragedy. His relationship with the local guys does not develop immediately. This year a small delegation from China came to Anadyr. As it turned out, to visit Chukotka they needed not only a Russian visa, but also a special permit, which foreigners are entitled to stay in the border zone. It is almost impossible today to form a program from films from the Arctic countries, therefore, a course has been taken on countries that are ready for cooperation, and this is primarily China and Iran. The jury included the Iranian director Behruz Shoaibi, who concluded after his stay in Russia: “We are not as far apart as it might seem.” He easily communicated with the Tajik director Faizullo Faizov, whose debut “Water Boy” was awarded for the screenplay. Faizullo is an actor by his first education received in Dushanbe, and he studied directing in Iran. He will direct his next film under the direction of Luc Besson. And his compatriot, a non-professional director, a third-year student of the Faculty of Economics, Alizhan Jalilov, was awarded for the non-fiction short film “Alif. Before. Re. Mi”.
Yuan Li, deputy secretary general of the Chinese Association of Family and Children’s Films, who has become a favorite of Chukchi children, said that this is the first Chinese program of international level since the pandemic. It featured the cartoon “To the Bright Side”, the idea of which was born in the midst of covid to cheer people up. 7 directors – not only from China, but also from other countries (they are all representatives of different schools) – created 7 short stories. One of them refers to the Sichuan earthquake in 2008, where tens of thousands of people died, and the displaced people, a boy without a leg, moving on a prosthesis, become heroes. The hero of another short story is an elderly soup shop owner who has a wrist injury from overwork. This excited the young viewers so much that there was a conversation about how hard people work in China – from 4 in the morning until midnight. There is also a bus driver in the film, who is retiring tomorrow, and he is escorted with honors to a well-deserved rest by a firefly girl and her friends. We have almost no such socially striking animation. Yuan Li not only answered all the questions, but also gave the children “ears” with pandas, stickers, and in return they presented her with cards, sweets, as soon as they confessed that Yuan Li loves sweets.
Russian animation was represented by twice Oscar nominee Konstantin Bronzit. It was enough for him to tell the children: “I am Tugarin the Serpent,” and nothing more was required. Now he is finishing work on the full-length cartoon Luntik and the Great Journey. “We, Soviet children, were not taught to watch movies, especially animation. Ask adults what “Hedgehog in the Fog” is about. Few of them will answer you. You need to learn to watch movies, and animation especially, because this is an abstract movie, and sometimes a certain image is formed from a “handle-legs-man,” said Konstantin Bronzit, who traveled all over Anadyr, visited Coal Mines. That is where the airport is located. In winter, it can be reached by helicopter or glider. Now I had to go along the so-called “road of life”, on the ice, which cracked and lived out its last days. The non-professional actress Liya Sanaa, who played in the filmed in the Altai language “Trope”, was awarded for the best female role. Despite the turn towards China and Iran, interest in cinema with a northern character remains. The jury’s special prize for her acting debut was given to an experienced documentary filmmaker Natalia Gugueva. She made “Fog” at a working weather station on the shores of the Barents Sea. Cinematographer Sandor Berkeshi filmed the harsh and majestic nature without postcard beauties. But for some reason, they awarded for camera work a documentary filmmaker from St. Petersburg, Alexei Golovkov, who shot the non-fiction film Seven Days of Autumn. It could be noted for other achievements. Moreover, part of the picture was taken by its heroes – a married couple with hearing loss. A Russian woman from Tula and a local Even have been living all alone in the taiga for 30 years, 200 km from the nearest village, using sign language. The film also uses filming by professional traveler Marina Galkina, who alone passed through the Verkhoyansk Range, and it is in the valley of these mountains that the characters of the film live. She also traveled around Chukotka for the sake of a feat and maintaining the spirit, as she herself says.
