The amount of counterfeit money in the banking system has more than halved year on year

In the first quarter of 2023, 3,018 counterfeit banknotes of the Bank of Russia were detected in the Russian banking system, informs Central Bank. This is 63% less than in the same period in 2022 (8,131). The most counterfeited denominations are 5,000 and 1,000 rubles. According to the territorial distribution, most fakes were found in the Central Federal District.
The number of counterfeit foreign banknotes identified has also dropped to 360 from 640 in the first quarter of 2022. At the same time, contrary to custom, more counterfeit euros were found than dollars (187 versus 170). Fake Chinese yuan (1), Ukrainian hryvnia (1) and Swedish krona (1) were also found.
