The Agrarian Committee of the Federation Council recommended that the government consider allowing the use of expired products in the manufacture of animal feed. The recommendations of the committee were given following the results of parliamentary hearings.

“Recommend to the government of the Russian Federation to consider the issue of introducing changes … providing for the possibility of transferring food products that have lost their consumer properties, including spoiled or expired, for processing for the manufacture of feed (and) feed additives for animals,” the document says, cited by RIA Novosti.

It is noted that in order to implement the recommendations, it is necessary to change the federal law “On the Quality and Safety of Food Products”, as well as the government decree on the procedure for withdrawing from circulation, recycling or destruction of low-quality and (or) dangerous food products, materials and products.

Research by the NAFI Analytical Center showedthat more than 70% of Russians regularly throw out expired products. With products with an expiring shelf life, 14% do the same. Most of the respondents, when they find products with an expiring shelf life in the refrigerator, try to cook something from them first or give them to pets. At the same time, every fourth Russian prefers to buy such products. Many do it for economy (because of the reduced price) or for reasons of environmental responsibility.
