The head of the German energy concern Uniper, Michael Lewis, did not rule out that Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) may continue to flow into Germany. At the same time, Uniper officially stopped purchasing Russian LNG at the end of August 2022.
“Russia still sells LNG on the world market, and wholesalers, including us, do not always know the origin of the gas they purchase,” Michael Lewis said in an interview Rheinische Post.
Uniper has completely stopped receiving gas from Russia since the end of August 2022. As a result, for 2022, Uniper received a loss of €19.1 billion according to international reporting standards.
The German Ministry of Economy previously opposed the import of Russian gas into the country in any form, including LNG. At the same time, the department admitted that there is no way to track whether it is entering the European gas system: gas is purchased by individual companies, not the state.
As part of the diversification of supplies against the background of the refusal of Russian gas in 2022, Germany started building floating terminals for LNG. The first such terminal became operational in December last year; it was put into operation ahead of schedule.
