Teresa Durova brought London fog and the secrets of the East to St. Petersburg

The rain in the city was on schedule

Teresa Durova’s theater opened its 30th season with a tour in St. Petersburg, thereby starting a large tour in honor of the anniversary. On this occasion, the stage of the Vyborg Palace of Culture, where the theater has been performing for the second day, was plunged into fog, and several hundred liters of water were poured onto it.

The play “The Prince and the Pauper” is being played – a theater version of Mark Twain’s historical novel, the events of which unfold in London in the mid-16th century. But Tereza Durova’s production, in its main theme, is still relevant today.

– It seems like a dream/ As you leave, look back at where your home remains, behind the wall of rain/. Behind the fence of rain, behind the wall of rain/ wave your hand to everyone…” the zong performed by Sergei Batov and Anastasia Buryak reaches me. In essence, these zongs are musical commentaries on bright, dynamic action. And the stage is actually flooded with rain – hundreds of liters fall like a wavering curtain from above. And the theatrical light from this drizzle paints a beautiful picture of the London fog.

“I can say one thing: so far these days in the city on the Neva it has rained only in our performance,” Tereza Durova laughs.

– Teresa, what are your plans for the 30th season?

“Since it’s our anniversary, we tried to build it in an unusual way,” says Teresa after the first showing of “The Prince and the Pauper.” – Firstly, we have already played the first premiere based on Pushkin’s story “Dubrovsky”, directed by Irina Pakhomova. Then there will be the play “Of Mice and Men” by Steinbeck, and after this I will present the great Chinese epic “Three Lotuses”. Well, we will also end the season with Pushkin – his “Little Tragedies”, I am now immersed in the documentary material of that time. So we will celebrate Alexander Sergeevich’s 225th birthday beautifully.

Well, the story of “The Prince and the Pauper” was completed in a completely historically accurate manner – the entire cast performed the composition of King Henry VIII. It sounded in Old English to the accompaniment of three English horns.

The London fogs in Vyborg will be replaced by the tales of Scheherazade, one of which is “Aladdin’s Magic Lamp” staged by Teresa Durova, where they sing and read poetry in Arabic. But that’s a completely different story.
