Telegram overtook TikTok in the list of popular applications in the Russian Federation during the January holidays

The Telegram messenger overtook the TikTok service and took third place in the list of the most popular applications among Russians during the New Year holidays, according to a study conducted by Megafon.
According to the operator’s data (available from Kommersant), the most popular application among Russians on New Year’s Eve and the January holidays was YouTube video hosting, but the activity of subscribers from the Russian Federation in it decreased by almost 10% year-on-year. Second place is held by VK, which demonstrates traffic consumption approximately at the level of the New Year period 2023 (+1%). Telegram came into third place, immediately adding 46%, which allowed it to overtake TikTok this year (the latter dropped by 17%).
The top 5 applications are completed by Kinopoisk, whose Internet traffic increased by 31%. “The messenger category as a whole showed explosive growth: compared to the holidays of 2023, subscriber activity in this segment increased by 45%. Online cinemas have also made significant gains, demonstrating a 28% year-on-year increase in traffic,” the authors of the study specify.
January 9 company Mediascope published a study according to which Telegram has almost caught up with VKontakte in terms of audience in Russia. According to published data, the messenger’s audience in Russia has grown by more than 30 million people in two years and, as of October 2023, amounted to 82.3 million. The VKontakte audience was estimated at 89.2 million users. In third place in popularity was TikTok with an audience of 67.6 million people.
