Tata Group to invest £4bn in UK battery gigafactory – Kommersant

UK government reported about the Tata Group’s decision to build a new plant for the production of batteries for electric vehicles in the country. The Indian company will invest £4 billion in it, and this is one of the largest investments in the British automotive industry in its history.

The plant will be built in Somerset, in the southwest of England, and will be able to produce batteries with a total capacity of 40 GWh. This will provide almost half of the country’s demand for batteries by the time it moves to selling electric vehicles only, that is, by 2030. The batteries will be supplied to both Tata-owned Jaguar Land Rover and other automakers.

The plant will directly create about 4,000 jobs and “thousands more across the supply chain” of battery materials and raw materials, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said. “We can be incredibly proud that Britain has been chosen as the home of the Tata Group’s first gigafactory outside of India, which has cemented our status as one of the most attractive places for the production of electric vehicles,” said the head of the British government.
