The international settlement system SWIFT plans to create a new platform for settlements with central bank digital currencies (CBDC) in the next 1-2 years. The agency reports this Reuters citing an unnamed source. As you know, the growing popularity of cryptocurrencies, in particular Bitcoin, has led many central banks of the world to begin developing their own digital currencies. Currently, approximately 90% of central banks are either exploring or have already introduced their own digital currencies.

Reuters quotes SWIFT Innovation Director Nick Kerrigan as saying the platform has been successfully tested. The tests were carried out over six months and involved 38 central and commercial banks, as well as settlement systems. The purpose of the tests was to harmonize payments in CBDC and develop a “road map” for creating a single “protocol” for the operation of the new platform. According to Mr. Kerrigan, the tests were successful and showed that central banks can use the existing infrastructure for mutual settlements in their digital currencies.
