Sweden’s Embracer acquires rights to ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit’

Swedish game studio Embracer announced today, August 18, the acquisition of seven companies at once. In particular, Embracer acquired Middle-earth Enterprises, a division of Saul Zaentz, which in turn owns the rights to motion pictures, video games, board games, merch and theme parks related to John Tolkien’s literary works The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. The amount of the transaction is not disclosed.
In addition, according to the release of the company, Embracer received the rights to other literary works telling about Middle-earth. The writer’s heirs and HarperCollins retain the rights to publish his books. The exact list of works, the rights to which have passed to Embracer, according to the company, “has yet to be established.”
Embracer said it could now work on making new films based on Tolkien’s literary works, including dedicating them to heroes such as Gandalf, Gollum and Aragorn.
