The authorities of the state of Saxony have signed an agreement with the Taiwanese microprocessor manufacturer TSMC to expand the cooperation program. The agreement provides for future engineers from Saxony to be sent to Taiwan to study at local universities followed by internships at TSMC factories. This is reported by Bloomberg.
Under the terms of the agreement, TU Dresden will send approximately 50 students to Taiwan each year starting in spring 2024. They will study for three months at local universities, followed by an additional three months of internship at TSMC factories, gaining specific skills in microprocessor manufacturing. According to Ursula Staudinger, rector of the Technical University of Dresden, National Taiwan University was the first to announce its readiness to participate in this program. As part of the agreement, a representative office of Saxony was opened in Taipei, which will deal with the development of ties in the field of science, research and education. As expected in Germany, such cooperation will solve the problem of the shortage of qualified engineering personnel in the country’s technology sector.
In addition, as part of bilateral cooperation, TSMC announced plans in August to build a microprocessor manufacturing plant in Saxony. The required investment is estimated at €10 billion. TSMC produces about 60% of all microprocessors in the world and about 90% of the most advanced microprocessors.
