Strikes began at three General Motors plants in Canada - Kommersant

Unifor, a Canadian union representing auto workers, has gone on strike at three General Motors (GM) plants in Canada after negotiations with the company to improve labor contracts failed. As noted in statement Unifor, GM “stubbornly refuses to accept the terms of our model agreement” even though it knows that union members “will never allow GM to violate these terms – not today or any other time.”

The strike, which began at midnight local time, involves about 4,300 workers at GM plants in Oshawa, St. Catharines and Woodstock in Ontario. Among the union demands that GM has not met are improved pension conditions, support for retiring workers, and the transfer of temporary workers to permanent and full-time jobs. The union says the strike will continue until all demands are met.

GM noted that “very positive progress” was made during negotiations with the unions, but, unfortunately, it was not possible to reach an agreement. Meanwhile, the company stresses that they are continuing negotiations and are keen to reach a “fair and flexible agreement.”
