Steel output in Russia decreased by 7.2% in 2022

In 2022, steel production in Russia decreased by 7.2% to 71.5 tons, should from a report by the World Steel Association.
In December, steel production in the country amounted to 5.5 tons, which is 11.3% less than a year earlier. In total, 1.879 billion tons of steel were produced in the world in 2022, the figure decreased by 4.2% compared to 2021.
Russia closes the top five countries in steel production in 2022. China took the first place. China produced more than 1 billion tons of steel, but the volumes still decreased by 2.1% compared to 2021.
China is followed by India – 124.7 million tons of steel in 2022. The country was able to increase production by 5.5% compared to the previous year. Japan (89.2 million tons) and the USA (80.7 million tons) also entered the top five countries in steel production. In both countries, steel production also declined – by 7.4% and 5.9%, respectively.
November 2022 at the Ministry of Industry and Trade predicted a decrease in steel output in Russia by 6-8% in 2022. At the same time, the agency does not expect a decrease in production volumes in 2023. According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, steel production next year will remain at the level of 2022.
In 2021, the ministry reported a record level of steel output of 77 million tons. In 2022-2023. it followed from the November forecasts that the output could stabilize at the level of 70.8–72.4 million tons.
The decrease in steel output in the Russian Federation in 2022 occurred against the background of the EU sanctions against the Russian Federation. In March, as part of the fourth package, the EU banned the import of rolled steel, fittings, welded and seamless pipes from Russia. According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, these sanctions affected the export of 3.9 million tons of finished rolled steel, 200,000 tons of pipe products and 700,000 tons of steel billets, which amounted to about $3.7 billion in value terms.
In August, Deputy Prime Minister, head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov noted that in the second quarter of 2022, the export of ferrous metallurgy enterprises decreased by 20%. In particular, the sanctions affected the production and export volumes of Severstal, MMK, NLMK, Evraz.
