A few months ago, Stas Namin’s work was recorded by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, after which the suite was presented to the attention of Grammy experts. At the moment, the suite is included in the award playlist, and this is already a serious advancement, especially considering the fact that more than seven thousand artists are vying for the award.
For the general public, Stas Namin is one of the most famous participants in the domestic rock movement. His group “Flowers” has long been considered one of the classics of the genre, and the production project “Gorky Park” had an incredible resonance for local musicians in America and Europe.
However, rock and popular music no longer limit the musical horizons of Stas Namin. The composer and producer successfully engages in his own musical theater, composes music for musicals and films, records ethno-rock and ethno-jazz, and also shows interest in symphonic music.
“Autumn in St. Petersburg” appeared as a symphonic suite back in the nineties, since then it has been performed by various orchestras and was released on an album in 2011. In 2014, Stas Namin began work on his first symphony, Centuria S – Quark, which was eventually recorded at the legendary Abbey Road studio in London. In the latest version, “Autumn in St. Petersburg” was supplemented with new fragments, and it was in this form that it was presented at the Grammy Awards in the “Best Contemporary Instrumental Album” category.
It is quite difficult to guess the future Grammy fate of Stas Namin’s work. Success at any award is largely a lottery and a lucky coincidence, but getting on the playlist already attracts attention. Moreover, unlike artists who make pop music, academic musicians from Russia have repeatedly taken away treasured gramophones from the ceremony.
The first Soviet winner of the prestigious award was Svyatoslav Richter. In 1961, academics celebrated his performance of Johannes Brahms’ Second Piano Concerto. The legendary Mstislav Rostropovich was awarded the Grammy five times, and pianist and director Vladimir Ashkenazy won seven times during his career. Also receiving a Grammy Award were Yuri Bashmet and his orchestra, violinists Gidon Kremer and Maxim Vengerov, pianists Mikhail Pletnev, Evgeny Kissin, opera performers Marina Domashenko and Ildar Abdrazakov. For the best text album for children, the Grammy in 2004 was awarded to Mikhail Gorbachev, who, together with actress Sophia Loren and former American President Bill Clinton, voiced the collection of musical fairy tales by Sergei Prokofiev “Peter and the Wolf”.
The most recent victory of a Russian musician at the Grammys happened in 2018, when award experts noted the young pianist Daniil Trifonov. Let’s hope that the list of our successes at the world-famous ceremony will continue. And this year there is already a promise for success.
