John Romita Sr. was born on January 24, 1930 in New York City and drew his first comic book in 1949. At the beginning of his career, he became famous for his romantic comics. In 1966, he became the principal artist on the main Spider-Man series The Amazing Spider-Man and was one of the creators of such characters as Mary Jane Watson, Reno, Kingpin, Shocker and Gwen Stacy.
John Romita Sr.’s work on Spider-Man is considered a classic and helped fuel the character’s popularity. The artist is also one of the creators of the appearance of another popular Marvel superhero, Wolverine. In 1973, he became Marvel’s art director and significantly influenced the company’s comic book style during the 1970s and 1980s.
John Romita Sr. reduced his creative activity in the 2000s. His son also works for Marvel and was one of the artists on the Spider-Man series.
