Today, December 4, the AMI association, which includes 83 Spanish media corporations, reported about filing a lawsuit against Meta Corporation (recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation). AMI accuses her of violating fair competition rules in the advertising market and EU regulations on user data protection. The association is demanding compensation of €550 million from Meta. The claim was filed in a Spanish court last Friday.
AMI includes, among others, such publications as El Pais, El Mundo, ABC, La Vanguardia. According to the association, Meta “massively” and “systematically” uses personal data collected by its platforms without user consent, giving it an “unfair” advantage in the advertising market. According to AMI President José Joly, Meta has achieved a dominant position through methods that violate the laws, and this very position of the corporation in the advertising market harms the Spanish media and puts their existence at risk.
As lawyer Nicholas Gonzalez-Cuellar noted, similar processes against Meta could be launched in other European countries, since we are talking about a violation of EU law. Meta has not yet commented on the allegations.
