Soyuzmultfilm appealed to the Investigative Committee over the rights of American companies to Cheburashka

The Soyuzmultfilm film studio appealed to the Investigative Committee of Russia (ICR) with a request to check the legality of contracts concluded with the American company La Roubine, reported RBC with reference to the press service of the film studio. These contracts concern international rights to the Cheburashka brand.
As Soyuzmultfilm reported, the required verification is already being carried out. The film studio also noted that this is not the first time that La Roubine has been involved in similar proceedings. Previously, she tried to prove her rights to the characters of the Ekran television studio – Leopold the Cat and Little Raccoon.
In addition, the Russian film studio stated that it considers the agreement with Japanese companies from 2005 completed. Then the company Terebi Tokyo burodobando Kabushikigaisha (now Kabushikigaisha Terebi Tokyo Communications or TV TOKYO Communications Corporation) received a license for cartoons and characters, including Cheburashka. The contract expires in 2023 and will not be extended by decision of the film studio.
According to representatives of Soyuzmultfilm, the Japanese corporation paid $30 thousand for the transfer of rights to Cheburashka, but accrued royalties only from showing cartoons in cinemas. A Russian film studio has not received interest payments from advertising activities for 10 years, since the sale of souvenirs is not specified in the contract. Moreover, TV TOKYO transferred its sublicense to Cheburashka Project LLP in 2015. Soyuzmultfilm stated that they do not have information about this company.
