Sokurov’s “Fairy Tale” will be shown at the Rotterdam Film Festival

The participation of Russian paintings in the Berlinale will be announced on January 23
At the 52nd Rotterdam International Film Festival, which is focused on debut, auteur and experimental films and which opens on January 25, Alexander Sokurov’s film about the events of the Second World War will be shown. His heroes were Stalin, Mussolini, Churchill, Hitler and other historical figures.
“Fairy Tale” was made in co-production with Belgium and without government funding from Russia. It starred foreign actors. The picture has already participated in the program of one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world – in Locarno, Switzerland. It was screened in Turin and at the Tokyo Film Festival, and released in Portugal under the slogan “Shadows of the Old World”. Alexander Sokurov says that he used to make films about each individual – “Moloch”, “The Sun”, “Taurus”, and now he made a fantasy, which is not a documentary film, active politics, but only a work of art. “Fairy Tale” is like a play of shadows, and the viewer, along with the characters, finds himself at the gates of Heaven and Hell, feels like a character in Dante’s “Divine Comedy”.
Rotterdam will also show “One Little Night Secret” by Natalia Meshchaninova, which entered the Big Screen Competition, and “Two” by Alexandra Karelina in the section of short and medium-length films.
On January 23, the program of the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival will be announced. It will open February 16th. A year ago, Anastasia Veber, a director from St. Petersburg, won the Golden Bear for a short film for the 20-minute feature film Trap, where non-professional actors were filmed, and a social teacher played the role of a young teacher.
Russia is not represented in the current and just announced short competition. It is likely that our films will not be in other programs either. The world premiere of Sokurov’s “The Sun” about the Japanese emperor Hirohito and the nature of power, by the way, took place in the main Berlinale competition. This year, many Russian journalists were denied accreditation, with the exception of representatives of specialized film publications.
