Sokurov’s “Fairy Tale” appeared on YouTube after a rental certificate was refused

The film “The Fairy Tale” will not be shown in cinemas due to the refusal of the Ministry of Culture to issue a distribution certificate for the film. However, the film was posted on YouTube. Director Alexander Sokurov announced this TASS.
“No other shows are planned, because for this we need to have a place to show it. This film needs to be shown on the big screen, and cinemas, of course, in accordance with the ban, will not carry out these screenings. And now it seems to me that there is probably no particular need for this,” the director said in a conversation with the agency.
He confirmed that the recording of the film can be viewed online, and recalled that the film was released in many countries. “And only in Germany and Russia there is an official ban on its showing,” the director emphasized.
Today, December 3, Ksenia Sobchak in her Telegram channel reported about the closed screening of the film that took place on November 19 in Moscow. At the screening there were discussions about the film with Mr. Sokurov. Ksenia Sobchak published a recording of the film and discussion on her YouTube channel.
October 18 Mr. Sokurov denied information about the online placement of the film “Fairy Tale”. Then Director Arseny Gonchukov wrote on Facebook (the social network belongs to Meta, which is recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation and is banned) that “The Fairy Tale” “literally in a week” will appear online in the voice-over of the director himself.
October 13 Ministry of Culture refused in issuing a distribution certificate for a film in Russia. As justification, the department referred to subparagraph “g” of paragraph 18 of the issuance rules approved by the government in 2016: “In other cases specified by federal laws.” The director called this the next stage of censorship.
In the film “Fairy Tale” Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini and Churchill meet in the afterlife. The black-and-white picture raises questions related to the role of the individual in history and the responsibility of political leaders to their fellow citizens. The filming involved documentary footage and quotes from speeches of historical figures. The film premiered at the Locarno Film Festival in the summer of 2022.
