Director Alexander Sokurov said that he was informed of a ban from the Ministry of Culture on showing his film “The Fairy Tale” at the international film festival in Moscow. According to the director, the film may then be denied a distribution certificate and an “unspoken ban on showing all my cinematic works” may be introduced.
“There are big problems ahead in life,” stated Sokurov on social networks – just like in Soviet times, when all my works were prohibited from being shown.”
He added that he was protesting against the violation of “my constitutional right to freely communicate my works with my compatriots.”
The Ministry of Culture has not yet commented on the information about a possible ban on showing the film.
How writes “Kommresant”, the director himself previously described “The Tale” as a fantastic story about the Second World War, in which Hitler, Stalin, Churchill and Mussolini meet in a place similar to hell. The film premiered at the 2022 Locarno Film Festival.
