Today, October 16, the Australian Digital Safety Commission announced on the results of an audit of some Internet companies and social networks regarding their fight against the dissemination of information about the sexual exploitation of minors. In February, the commission requested data from Twitter (now called X), Google, TikTok, Twitch and Discord on combating such information.
Based on the results of the inspection, the regulator issued a warning to Google, which, according to the commission, did not clearly answer the regulator’s questions about the operation of the company’s mechanisms to counter the dissemination of information about the sexual exploitation of minors. The commission asked Google to provide additional information.
In turn, social network X “failed to answer a number of key questions, including questions about exactly how long it takes the company to respond to complaints received about the posting of information about the sexual exploitation of minors on its platform; about the measures the company is taking to combat the dissemination of such content in live broadcasts, etc.” Based on this, the commission decided to impose a fine of 610 thousand Australian dollars ($386 thousand) on X, giving her 28 days to prepare a response and appeal the fine. If X does not respond within this period, the commission reserves the right to take further action.
Representatives of X have not yet commented on the regulator’s statement.
