The number of small and medium-sized enterprises in Russia has grown to a record. The general director of the SME Corporation said that there are now more than 6 million entities in the register of such companies. Vedomosti gives his assessment. The number of individual entrepreneurs is also increasing. Compared to 2022, the number of individual entrepreneur registrations increased by almost a quarter. These are calculations from the Solar Staff service. According to tax data, since January 1, 443 thousand new individual entrepreneurs have appeared in Russia.
What is the reason for this growth? And doesn’t it carry risks? Alexey Petropolsky, head of the bureau for protecting the rights of entrepreneurs in the Moscow branch of Opora Rossii, answered these questions to Kommersant FM: “A huge number of enterprises either suspended their activities or closed during the pandemic. Then the SVO began – this was the second wave, when companies closed, went bankrupt, a huge number of sanctions were introduced, businesses simply stopped working the way they used to.
Now everyone is used to everything. In 2023, there were no shocks that would have contributed to the mass closures and bankruptcy of enterprises. And, of course, a wave of closures is always followed by a surge in the opening of enterprises and new production facilities. Import substitution has started, huge opportunities have emerged to restart something, to start a business in Russia. Many markets have become free. Even if you take a classic shopping center, you will see that at the beginning of the SVO it was 50-70% empty. Now brands are gradually being replaced, new companies, both domestic and Asian, are entering, and trade is resuming.”
The CEO of the SME Corporation said that small businesses have become a catalyst for supply-side economics. But the chief economist of the consulting company PF Capital, Evgeniy Nadorshin, is not optimistic about this: “If you don’t ignore the processes taking place in small and medium-sized businesses, you won’t be able to read the numbers positively.
With the total number, everything seemed to be even very good, and it was growing. But if you look at 2022: the number of individual entrepreneurs is growing, while other legal entities are decreasing. At the beginning of 2023, this trend continues. Data from early December – again the number of individual entrepreneurs is growing, other legal entities continue to decline, that is, more structured forms of relationships in SMEs.
It seems that small businesses are becoming considerably larger within themselves, that is, the number of organizational forms that require the employment of employees is decreasing, and the number of those that do not involve employment is growing.
Looking at the Federal Tax Service statistics on employment, we see exactly this: it has fallen by about 400 thousand to date. It is easy to guess that the growing number of individual entrepreneurs does not compensate for the contribution to GDP. I’m afraid that when the official data from Rosstat comes out, we will see that in 2023, for example, and in 2022 it decreased.”
As Vedomosti notes, registrations of individual entrepreneurs have increased even despite the changes in working conditions that await them in 2024. Insurance premiums for yourself and each employee will increase by 8%.
