When the trial of the Nice attack ends, the month of December will have begun. Three and a half months of hearings, starting Monday, September 5, are needed to shed light on the second deadliest attack in France since the Second World War.
On the evening of July 14, 2016, on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, a man drove his truck into the crowd who had come to admire the fireworks. 86 people are killed and hundreds more injured. The testimonies of these survivors and relatives of the disappeared will mobilize several weeks of hearings. Before the start of the trial, 865 people had joined as civil parties.
The author of the facts, killed the same evening by the police, will not be judged. Therefore, the question of what is at stake in this trial arises. What can we expect? Among the eight defendants, none is considered an accomplice of the killer. Soren Seelow, journalist and terrorism specialist, follows the audience to The world. In this episode of the “L’Heure du Monde” podcast, he discusses the atypical profile of the assailant and the particularities of this case.
An episode of Esther Michon and Claire Leys. Production and music: Amandine Robillard. Presentation and editor-in-chief: Morgane Tual. In this episode: the testimony of Célia Viale, victim of the attack and member of the association Promenade des anges. Interviews with three lawyers involved in the trial, Vincent Brengarth and Claire Josserand-Schmidt, lawyers at the Paris bar, and Olivia Chalus-Pénochet, lawyer at the Nice bar.
