A group of Gulf states has threatened Netflix with legal action if it continues to air content that is “contrary” to Islam, while state media in Saudi Arabia indicated that the offensive material was centered on TV shows depicting gay people.

The statement, released jointly by the Saudi media regulator and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), headquartered in the Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh, did not specifically refer to the material, only mentioning content that “contradicts Islamic and public values.”

“The platform has been contacted to remove this content, including content intended for children,” the statement said.

Regional authorities “will monitor the platform’s compliance with the directives, and if infringing content continues to be broadcast, the necessary legal action will be taken.”

The Gulf Cooperation Council includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
