Shell company announced on the purchase of the Danish biogas producer Nature Energy Biogas, Europe’s largest producer of this feedstock, for $2 billion. The deal is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2023.
Nature Energy was founded in Denmark in 1979, initially the company was engaged in the distribution of natural gas. Since 2015, the company has been producing biogas or renewable natural gas (RNG), which is obtained by methane decomposition of biomass and is a complete analogue of natural gas, differing from it only in origin. Nature Energy now has 14 industrial biogas plants (12 of them in Denmark) that provide 3,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. About 30 new units are under development in Europe and North America, which will increase production to 3,300 barrels of oil equivalent per day by 2030. Under the terms of the agreement with Shell, the Danish company will retain its brand and become a division of Shell.
Like many other oil and gas companies, Shell is looking for ways to transition to low-carbon energy in order to achieve zero emissions goals. BP recently announced it was buying US biogas producer Archaea Energy for $4.1 billion, debt included. Prior to this, Chevron Corporation agreed to buy biogas producer Renewable Energy Group for $3.15 billion.
