The so-called Great Auction Week of Asian Art has just taken place in New York. Several outstanding results have been achieved.
First, at the Sotheby’s auction entitled “Everything is temporary” a white glazed Korean porcelain moon jar from the Joseon Dynasty, which ruled Korea from the late 14th to early 20th centuries, was sold for $3.6 million. The traditional “moon jar” is so called because of the shape (consisting of two halves folded together) and the milky color of the topping glaze.
Moon jars were originally made by royal ceramists to store grains, liquids and flowers. According to the international head of Sotheby’s Chinese art department in America and Europe, the piece must be at least 40 cm in height to be of historical and artistic value.
According to experts, not many jars remain from the Joseon Dynasty, perhaps only a few dozen.
The Moon Jug left the auction, which lasted 3.5 minutes, to the only bidder. It happens.
Meanwhile, Christie’s exhibited a pair of engravings by the Japanese Katsushika Hokusai, “Under the Wave off the Coast of Kanagawa.”
There were high hopes for these engravings, given that in March 2022, another version of the same work, also known as “The Great Wave,” went to Christie’s for $2.76 million, with an estimate five times lower.
At the current auction, the best quality copy received $1.7 million, which is more than double its estimate. And a worse copy sold for “only” $252 thousand.
The Wave prints were very popular during Hokusai’s lifetime. However, no one knows how many such specimens there are. Perhaps around 200.
Christie’s holds seven world records for the most expensive Great Wave prints sold at auction.
Interestingly, in March 2024, during the next Asian week, Christie’s announces that the entire series of Hokusai’s “46 Views of Mount Fuji” will be put up for auction. “Wave” is just one of this series. It will be many millions.
