The Mars Volta “The Mars Volta”

Fun Lovin’ Criminals “The Roosevelt Sessions”

Back in 2012, the leader of Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Hugh Morgan, released a solo album, and in 2021 he finally broke off relations with the group, after which the bass guitarist Fast, who now takes the place of the frontman, remained the only founding member of the group. On September 3, the group released the first single with the new line-up, and now the first EP Fun Lovin’ Criminals of the new edition is on sale. The first song of The Roosevelt Sessions is called “Unfinished Business”. This is a kind of confirmation that the band does not intend to stop, and in this case it is not about specific persons, but about the idea, the spirit of Fun Lovin’ Criminals, the spirit of gangster jazz and rap with lazy guitars. It would be strange to say that the band lost nothing at all with Morgan’s departure, yet he is a very charismatic artist and his reading style has become a reference point for many. Rather, now, instead of one strong creative unit, there are two. Fun Lovin’ Criminals, as they say now, generate vibes, and Hugh Morgan hosts radio shows, writes books, makes TV programs about Latin American music and sometimes writes songs – just as well as before.

Suede “Autofiction”

Critics and bloggers stubbornly describe the ninth studio album of the English band Suede “Autofiction” in the categories of punk rock, and nothing but the inflated imagination of the band’s PR agents can explain this. The speakers sound a mixture of glam and post-punk, more like Placebo than Sex Pistols or The Clash. Gone is the elegance inherent in both frontman Brett Anderson’s voice and the band’s melodies. Instead, Suede fans were offered carefully polished song material suitable for stadiums of any capacity. As if Suede suddenly realized that life had passed by and they had to do something completely different. Only on the sixth track “Drive Myself Home” do they return to soulful lyrics – in this genre in the generation of Britpop Suede had no equal. Something similar to Suede’s punk breaks through only in the song “Shadow Self”. All in all, “Autofiction” is an ear-pleasing arena-rock album that especially touches the soul when listened to at the highest volume. This happens, perhaps, only with Manic Street Preachers.

And in the song “Police” Anton Makarov has more punk than in the entire Suede album.

“Blonde” OST

The most famous collaborations between Nick Cave and director Andrew Dominic are the feature film The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and the documentary Once Again With Feeling. The biopic of Marilyn Monroe “Blonde” appeared when Nick Cave and his constant partner Warren Ellis produced their soundtracks already with almost no creative insight, simply put them on stream. “Blonde” is a biopic far from the standards of the genre, and therefore, the director did not need anything even remotely reminiscent of the song “I Wanna Be Loved By You” or “Diamonds Are The Girl’s Best Friends”. Rina Sawayama “Hold The Girl”

English singer of Japanese origin Rina Sawayama appeared on the horizon in quarantine 2020, and everyone who was at home could carefully listen to her songs, in which pop in the style of Britney Spears was intertwined with hard and heavy. On the second album, Rina Sawayama dispenses with deliberate guitar attacks, but works with similar sources of inspiration. The album “Hold The Girl” debuted immediately at number three in the UK charts – the best result ever for an artist of Japanese origin.

Robbie Williams “XXV”

Another British phenomenon. It would seem that Robbie Williams did everything with his golden hits – including arranging them for the orchestra more than once. Nevertheless, a selection of the best songs from his repertoire, processed by the Dutch Metropole Orkest, took the top position in the British national chart in the first week after the release. The most valuable thing about Robbie Williams’ concert performances in such an “expensive” format is his dialogue with the audience, he is a great comedian. But the album “XXV” does not contain any monologues or reactions from the public. These are studio versions, recorded at an incredible degree of narcissism. The most expensive edition of the collection contains 29 tracks. Robbie Williams fans are happy, and here it is worth remembering that for each such “gift” release in the singer’s catalog there is a selection of rare and unreleased items. Such collections from Williams are released in the Under The Radar series, and there he just does not hesitate to seem funny and comes off to the fullest. We are waiting for the next one.

Marcus Mumford “Self-Titled”

Mumford & Sons are one of the most successful British bands of the current century, and among folk bands, the most successful. All peaks are taken, and musicians can afford third-party hobbies. One of the founders of Mumford & Sons, Winston Marshall, was carried away by the works of far-right philosophers and was eventually fired from the group. And Marcus Mumford decided to just try to record an album with a guitar, and for the very first single from it, “Cannibal”, the video was shot by Steven Spielberg himself. There are indeed musicians on the scene today who are worthy of such comparisons. But it’s definitely not Marcus Mumford. “Self-Titled” is the work of a professional, crowned with all possible laurels, but there are few painfully sincere moments for which people listen to songs with a guitar.

25/17 “Overcome”

The group 25/17 has already released the second EP in a year, and it did not do without songs that are familiar to fans of the band from concerts. 25/17 are incredibly prolific and barely manage to package new material in a listener friendly way. The central song of the album is called “Cold Spring”, and the hosts of patriotic telegram channels managed to declare it the best text about who is now their own, who is strangers and who is on whose side. The authors say that “as they sang about love and death, so they sing, such is the track.” “Cold Spring” is, first of all, a skillful handling of the word. “Boyarin saws a tender, my fender is a pitchfork,” — 25/17 has a lot of this. Like any good song, the listener can turn “Cold Spring” to his desired side and adapt it to his beliefs. The most living example in this sense is the legacy of Viktor Tsoi. By the way, without “Kino” was not done on this album. It is closed by the song “April” with additional stanzas by Andrey Bledny, and everyone can decide for himself what “spring” is for him.

“Smeshariki” “Smeshariki 2.2.22”

On digital platforms, it is unforgivably rare to find releases that can be described as childish. “Smeshariki 2.2.22” is another step by the creators of the popular animated series towards the complete and final depreciation of the brand. At the beginning of the year, the animators released the collection SmeshCoverFest, where songs from the cartoon were performed by famous rock and pop artists. Now – a full collection of remixes. And Smeshariki also has a full-fledged concert show – in general, the name works around the clock. The collection of remixes did without any special experiments, which means that you can expect these tracks at children’s holidays, since the younger generation knows the lyrics by heart. Maybe a little less kids will like Indian Tea (Deep Trance Remix) and a couple of trap remixes. But it will definitely appeal to adults – especially those who spend time in the countries of Southeast Asia. It is worth waiting for these songs on the “Children’s Radio”. Next in line, apparently, “Smeshariki with an orchestra”, but this is not certain.
