The consumption of ferrous scrap in Russia in 2022 decreased by 25% to 19.9 million tons. At the same time, scrap collection fell by 32% last year to 20.4 million tons, and exports outside the EAEU (including Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan , Kyrgyzstan and Russia) decreased by 8.4 times to 384,000 tons, Ruslom.com, an association of scrap collectors, reported on January 12.
“Scrap consumption has fallen due to a decrease in steel production in Russia and a decrease in the share of scrap in the production of metal,” Viktor Kovshevny, director of the industry association Ruslom.com, explained to Vedomosti. “At the same time, exports were practically unavailable due to restrictive export duties, low prices, and a significant increase in the cost of freight and transshipment in ports. As a result, scrap collection has been greatly reduced.”
