Scientists have uncovered the secret ingredient in the paintings of Leonardo da Vinci and Renaissance artists
In Germany, scientists from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have discovered an unusual secret of paintings by Renaissance artists, including Leonardo da Vinci. The results of the study were published in the journal Nature Communications.
Famous artists, as proved by German researchers, added egg yolk to oil paints. Because of this “trick”, the moisture resistance of the paintings increased and the formation of “wrinkles” in the works and, surprisingly, yellowing, was prevented. The addition of an egg component to oil paints has been found to act as an antioxidant: it slows down the separation of the paint into oil and pigment.
Even with a very small amount of egg yolk, “an amazing change in the properties of oil paint” can be achieved, scientists have told about the secret of the Renaissance artists, whose works are perfectly preserved to this day.
