For large Russian banks, the share of individuals’ transfers through the FPS often exceeds 70% of the total volume of such transactions. According to their forecasts, by the end of next year this share may approach 100%. However, according to the Central Bank, in the total volume of the banking system, the FPS accounts for no more than 20% of transfers. According to experts, this is due to the conservative position of Sberbank. And the bank itself is confident that the volume of transfers within it and in two years will be higher than the volume of transfers through the SBP.
Banks interviewed by Kommersant announced a significant increase in the share of SBP transactions in the total volume of transfers of individuals. So, at the beginning of 2023, in Russian Standard Bank, SBP accounted for 68% of transfers, 30% for card transfers and 2% for transfers by details. In PSB, SBP accounts for almost 70%, and in Tinkoff Bank, by the end of 2022, SBP accounts for 70% of incoming transfers of individuals. In the ICB, transfers of individuals through SPB account for 75%, 19% – for transfers from card to card, 5% – for interbank transfers, and less than 1% for intrabank transfers. In VTB, about 80% are transfers via SBP, transfers from card to card – 18%. And in Post-Bank, more than 80% of transfers are made by phone number through the SBP.
According to Anatoly Pechatnikov, Deputy Chairman of the Board of VTB, the bank’s clients made 151 million transfers worth 1.3 trillion rubles, which is 1.5 times higher than the result for the same period last year. “In the first quarter of 2023, the number of transfers through the FPS increased by 86% compared to the first quarter of 2022, and the total amount of transfers increased by 81%,” the MKB noted. “Now the increase in transfers through the SBP is an average of 30% per month,” says Elena Petrova, deputy chairman of the board of Russian Standard Bank.
Under such conditions, bankers expect that the SBP may crowd out other transfers. Anatoly Pechatnikov believes that by the end of 2023, the share of transfers through the SBP in the bank will be 85%, and by the end of 2024 it will be able to approach 100%. “We assume that all the bank’s customers will not switch to SPB, but this figure will approach 100%,” the MCB said. “The share of transfers through the SBP by the end of 2024 may grow to 90%,” the PSB estimates.
However, experts point to the limiting factors of such evolution. Dmitry Vishnyakov, an independent expert in the payment card market, believes that the further development of the SBP depends on the limits for free transfers for consumers set by the Central Bank. “The share will tend to 100%, but by the end of 2024 it is unlikely to reach such an indicator, since the consumer still needs primary knowledge about the money transfer system,” he said. “The factor that hinders further growth in the share of SBP is the limitation on the amount of free transfers, customers still prefer to transfer large amounts using account details due to commissions,” Tinkoff Bank noted.
The Bank of Russia avoided detailed forecasts, but also noted a steady increase in the share of transfers through the FPS. Among the factors contributing to the popularity of such transfers, there are tariffs – up to 100 thousand rubles. per month, citizens can transfer for free.
At the same time, despite the fact that the share of transfers through FPS often exceeds 70% for the surveyed banks, their overall market share is not so large. According to the Central Bank, in the fourth quarter of last year, more than 900 million transfers of individuals were made through the SBP in the amount of 4.7 trillion rubles, while citizens sent money using cards over the same period 3.4 billion times for a total of 19. RUB 9 trillion Thus, FPS transfers accounted for 19% in terms of transaction volume and almost 22% in terms of number. However, in the fourth quarter of 2021, both of these indicators were at the level of 10%.
According to experts, such a discrepancy in statistics is due to the share of Sberbank in the market of transfers of individuals and its attitude to the service. According to the head of the board of the Financial Innovations association Roman Prokhorov, Sberbank remains the main market maker in the market for transfers of individuals. “It has a share of FPS transfers well below 80%, its introduction of commissions on intrabank transfers from card to card served as an additional incentive for customers to move towards FPS, but this is unlikely to help FPS transfers overcome the 50% barrier by the end of 2024,” – says Mr. Prokhorov. Sberbank itself is also confident that the SBP will not be able to replace all other methods of transferring money between individuals. “The volume of transfers within Sberbank will be significantly higher than the volumes through the SBP by the end of 2024,” the bank said.
