Sber has identified a new fraud scheme through fake accounts of company heads

Sberbank (MOEX: SBER) revealed a new fraud scheme used by criminals to steal funds from corporate clients. Fraudsters create fake accounts for company executives in instant messengers, and then ask an accountant to transfer money to a third-party account.
From a fake account, the attackers begin a correspondence with the company’s accountant and give instructions to transfer funds from the organization’s account to the details specified in the message. After this, the company’s money goes to the accounts of drops – people who cash out and transfer funds stolen by scammers.
“Cyber fraudsters defraud legal entities less often than individuals, but the stolen amounts in these cases are much higher. Now a new method of fraud has emerged through the creation of a fake account for the head of a company in instant messengers. “Sber successfully identifies such schemes, and the bank’s fraud monitoring has already been supplemented with knowledge about this type of fraud,” commented Stanislav Kuznetsov, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Sberbank.
In December 2023, it became known that the Prosecutor General’s Office together with Roskomnadzor were exploring the possibility of revoking the licenses of telecom operators that miss fraudulent calls. To achieve this, it is proposed to amend the Law “On Communications”. According to the Bank of Russia, fraudsters stole 4.5 billion rubles from bank clients in the first quarter of 2023, and 3.6 billion rubles in the second quarter. Only 4.5% of the stolen funds were returned to clients.
