The sanctions imposed by the UK and the US against Russian aluminum, copper and nickel are a “double-edged sword,” Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters. In his opinion, the new restrictions will affect the interests of those who introduced them. He noted that “a certain destabilization of prices” has already occurred in the market.
“We treat them the same way as all other sanctions—we consider them absolutely illegal. And we believe that these sanctions are, in any case, a double-edged sword. And they will absolutely hit the interests of those who impose these sanctions,” a Kremlin representative commented on the new sanctions during a press call.
On April 12, the United States and Great Britain banned the import of Russian aluminum, copper and nickel, as well as their trading on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and the London Metal Exchange (LME). On the same day, the price of aluminum on the LME jumped 9.4%, the highest since 1987. Shares of Norilsk Nickel and Rusal are decreasing. The US Treasury clarified that in some cases the import of aluminum, copper and nickel may be permitted as an exception.
