The loss of Russian airlines from sales in 2022 amounted to 144 billion rubles, indicated in report Association of Air Transport Operators (AET). Industry revenues for the year decreased by 13%, expenses – by 3%.
At the end of the year, passenger traffic decreased by 14.2% to 95.2 million people. Freight traffic fell by 58.9% to 606.3 thousand tons. The largest decrease occurred on international air lines, in communication with non-CIS countries (in communication with the CIS countries, traffic increased).
Despite significant losses, in 2022 the industry managed to ensure the financial and economic stability of the majority of players, according to the AEVT. Two factors contributed to this: 100 billion rubles. state subsidies and a damper when calculating the tax deduction for jet fuel (estimated for 2022 it amounted to 98.6 billion rubles).
The EU and the US imposed sanctions on the Russian aviation industry in response to the Russian military operation in Ukraine. Carriers lost the opportunity to officially use European and American aircraft, export technical products, and already leased aircraft had to be returned to the lessor.
Against the backdrop of mass arrests of foreign aircraft, the Federal Air Transport Agency recommended that carriers stop flights abroad. In parallel with this, the EU closed the sky for Russian-registered aircraft.
