Russians began to spend more on medicines in 2023. Revenue from retail sales of drugs increased by almost 8%, the analytical company RNC Pharma told Kommersant FM. In total, pharmacies earned almost 1.5 trillion rubles in 2023, according to the AlphaRM platform. At the same time, inflation in the industry was slightly more than 6%; according to experts, these factors indicate that the segment is emerging from the crisis.

In 2023, the growth of the pharmaceutical market turned out to be natural for the first time in several years, says Nikolai Bespalov, development director at RNC Pharma: “The market has not just returned to inflationary growth, there are already signs of market growth due to increased demand. Since we do not have any global problems, as was the case, for example, during the coronavirus pandemic, now this is rather a positive trend that demonstrates an improvement in the economic component, indicates the actual development of the market, and not just the growth of the money supply in handling.

The population receives more money and has the opportunity to spend it on the purchase of medicines, including an increase in natural consumption and a switch to the purchase of more expensive drugs, that is, an analogue with a higher price is allocated in the line. The influence of any specific groups of drugs on the market is minimal, but there has been an increase in demand for antidepressants, contraceptives, drugs to improve sleep, all kinds of adaptogens, and so on. Such processes occur, but the main contribution to this dynamics is, of course, the growth in consumption of almost all medications.”

According to RNC Pharma, the volume of drug production in January 2024 increased by 12% compared to the same period in 2023. Over the past year, the number of pharmacies has also increased – there are 2.6 thousand more outlets in the country. However, the figures still do not allow us to talk about the growth of this market, says Boris Churadze, chief physician of the K+31 clinic network: “In fact, these figures are explained by official inflation; there is no frantic growth here.

Expenses for the purchase of medicines increased by an average of no less than 10%. As for the growth of consumption, there is now no mass incidence. On the contrary, in 2023 there was even a decrease in drug consumption due to the decline of COVID-19. Therefore, I would not talk about market growth in terms of 2023.”

According to AlphaRM, in 2023, the volume of drug supplies in quantitative terms fell by 7%, but in monetary terms the figure increased by the same 7%.
