Russian sausages have enough plastic for casings – Business – Kommersant

In Russia, there are no problems with casings for sausages and frankfurters, about 60% of which is plastic, according to the Russian Association of Plastic Processors. This segment is completely covered by Russian manufacturers, while other types of casings are also provided by suppliers from China, which completely replaced the volumes imported from Europe.
The Russian Association of Plastic Processors denies the shortage of casings for meat products and problems with supplies from China. Formerly newspaper “News” said that against the background of sanctions restrictions, there was a shortage of casings for the production of sausages and sausages, and because of the need to purchase it in China on a prepaid basis or through parallel imports, manufacturers are forced to stock up almost a year in advance, so costs increased by 25-70%.
As explained to Kommersant in the Union of Plastic Processors (SPP), modern sausage production uses mainly artificial casing, which is divided into three main types: plastic, cellulose and protein (collagen).
Russia produced 2.4 million tons of sausages in 2022they note there:
- 59% accounted for the plastic shell,
- 15% – protein,
- 17% – cellulose / fibrous,
- only 9% – for natural.
At the same time, the association assures, Russia is fully self-sufficient in terms of plastic casing, there is even a certain surplus of capacities. The largest manufacturers are Atlantis-Pack, Biostar and Florex, which together completely cover all the needs for this type of casing.
The collagen shell in the Russian Federation is produced by Belkozin. Now, SPP admits, its capacities are not enough to saturate the domestic market, but at present, manufacturers from China, which is the world’s largest producer of this type of casings, have completely replaced European suppliers in this segment.
“China also supplies cellulose casings for sausages, also fully compensating for the volume that European suppliers refused to supply,” the SPP notes.
They explain that there is only one subtype that Chinese suppliers cannot yet produce: large-caliber cellulose casings for the production of sausages. But this need is completely covered by domestic manufacturers of plastic shells with their new developments – permeable plastic shells. “There are no problems with casings in the meat processing industry, which is evidenced by full store shelves, where all types of sausages are presented, without any exceptions,” the association noted.
