The head of Russian Railways, Oleg Belozerov, said that it is planned to launch a completely unmanned train in Russia in 2026. This year, a partially unmanned train will be launched on the Moscow Central Circle (MCC), Mr. Belozerov said at the plenary discussion “The transport system of the future in the interests of passengers” as part of the exhibition and forum “Russia”, reports TASS.
“This summer we will launch here in Moscow on the MCC a train with unmanned driving at level 3A.” The next stage: we plan to launch a completely unmanned train in 2026. Some of the shift is due to the fact that the Finist, a completely replaced electric train, has now appeared and we are now attaching the necessary equipment to it, which we have already developed,” said the head of Russian Railways.
In 2022, a standard came into force that approved the Russian classification of automation levels (LA) by analogy with the international approach from GoA0 to GoA4. UA0 means complete absence of automation. UA1 – partial automation: the driver controls the train under the control of a security system. UA2 – conditional automation: the automatic steering system controls the start, controls the speed, stops, but the driver continues to be in the cab in case of an emergency. UA3 – high automation: the difference from the previous level is the ability of the auto-driving system to stop the train when an obstacle suddenly appears or a stop signal is given. UA4 – full automation, allowing the driver to control the train remotely. Almost all modern Russian trains are equipped with level UA2.
In 2019, Russian Railways planned introduce driverless trains in 2021. In April 2023, Deputy Head of Russian Railways Evgeny Charkin admitted the technological possibility of introducing unmanned Lastochka electric trains, however, this, according to him, will require changes in legislation and production programs.
