Russian operators will expand cooperation with Google on traffic exchange

Russian operators will expand the number of direct connections with Google – this will increase the capacity for traffic that is needed to quickly download content from the company. Market participants spoke about this RBC. Rostelecom representative Ivan Shevelev said that the company is expanding its existing connections with Google networks as needed. Transtelecom also confirmed that in 2023 they are actively expanding connections in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
At the MSK-IX forum on December 5, Konstantin Kolesov, head of strategic development of data transmission at VimpelCom (Beeline), said that Google offered Russian operators to organize a direct connection in Moscow and St. Petersburg to maintain the quality of access to the company’s services, including YouTube. He explained that since the beginning of hostilities in Ukraine, Google has stopped supplying new Global Cache servers, and those already installed have become outdated and began to fail.
In the letter, as RBC writes, the company announced the termination of traffic transmission through routing services. To minimize the impact on traffic, Google representatives suggested connecting to the joints directly.
Due to deterioration of Google’s infrastructure, the quality of its services may deteriorate, which is why videos on YouTube will only be available in low quality. VimpelCom believes that the quality of service will first decrease in the regions, and then in large cities.
