Russian international transportation rose to its highest level since the pandemic

Russian airlines reported an increase in passenger traffic on international routes. From January to August 2023, it increased by 33% compared to the same period a year earlier. Over the eight months of this year, airlines transported 14.6 million people. This is the maximum figure since 2020, according to data from the Federal Air Transport Agency cited by the newspaper. “Vedomosti”.
In the pre-pandemic year 2019, 37 million passengers traveled on international air flights. In 2020, passenger traffic amounted to only 9.7 million people. In 2021 – 12.1 million people, and in 2022 – only 11 million.
49.3 million people took domestic flights in 2019, 59.2 million in 2021. 56.3 million in 2023. There is an increase in the share of passengers transported bypassing Moscow. According to the Federal Air Transport Agency, in 2019 it was 26%, and in 2023 it had already reached 42%.
The Ministry of Transport explained this dynamics by state subsidies for air transportation under three programs – aimed at developing the regional route network, increasing the accessibility of transportation for socially vulnerable categories of the population, and supporting a single Far Eastern airline.
The ministry also noted the development of international transport. “Today, direct flights are carried out with 37 countries; on the Russian side, international flights are operated to 24 countries,” said the head of the Federal Air Transport Agency Alexander Neradko.
