Russian doctors may lose a third of payments from international pharmaceutical companies

According to the results of the year, Russian doctors and industry associations may lose about 30% of payments received from Western pharmaceutical companies that are members of the Association of International Pharmaceutical Manufacturers (AIPM), about this to the newspaper Kommersant told CEO of DSM Group Sergey Shulyak.
“For doctors, this (payments from pharmaceutical companies. – Vedomosti) is additional income, and for industry associations it is the main source of funding, since membership fees cannot ensure their activities,” Shulyak noted.
He clarified that this is due to the withdrawal of international pharmaceutical companies from the Russian market after the start of a special military operation on the territory of Ukraine. In particular, companies have already announced the decision to suspend investments in Russia and launch new projects. BayerPfizer, MSD, Novartis, while they continue to supply drugs to Russia.
Big pharma allocates funds to pay for consultations, holding conferences and reimbursement of expenses for participation in them, as well as in the form of donations and grants. For manufacturers, this is also one of the ways to promote their drugs on the market. In addition, the amount of funds for new research and development in Russia may also decrease, said Svetlana Zavidova, Executive Director of the Association of Clinical Research Organizations (ACRO).
According to the newspaper, last year foreign pharmaceutical companies allocated about 8.37 billion rubles, about 3.7 billion rubles, for research in Russia alone. amounted to payments to Russian doctors, about the same amount was received by industry organizations. The total amount of funds received from big pharma amounted to 19.3 billion rubles. These calculations were made on the basis of published reports of 47 companies that are members of the AIPM. For comparison: in 2020, the total volume of big pharma payments amounted to 15.7 billion rubles.
