Russian cinemas collected a record 4.5 billion rubles for the New Year holidays

From December 31 to January 8, Russian cinemas earned a record 4.5 billion rubles. During the New Year holidays cinemas were visited by 13.4 million people.

The revenue of cinemas for the specified period exceeded the figures of the previous year by 22%. Spectators purchased the largest number of tickets on January 3: 1.9 million people bought tickets worth 613.8 million rubles. The minimum figure was recorded on December 31: 198 thousand people purchased tickets in the amount of 60 million rubles.

According to UAIS, the most popular picture was the film “Cheburashka” directed by Dmitry Dyachenko. The premiere took place on January 1. Rental fees exceeded 3 billion rubles The 2nd place in terms of box office was taken by the Russian cartoon “Ivan Tsarevich and the Gray Wolf 5”, which was released on December 29, 2022. He collected 404 million rubles.

After the start of the special operation in Ukraine, the film industry faced a crisis. This happened due to the withdrawal from the Russian market of foreign film companies such as Warner Bros., Disney, Sony, Paramount and Universal Pictures. Against this background, rental fees in 2022 fell by 50-70%, and industry losses amounted to approximately 4.5 billion rubles.
